Apple Cider Vinegar
We must have all heard about Apple Cider Vinegar by now. It seems to be very fashionable these days and I’ve come across it a few years back and have used it ever since. I often read that it’s considered useful and beneficial for several reasons, largely due to its natural composition and potential health effects. Therefore I thought to add it in this book as well as one of the great healthy tips and ideas.
What’s actually in Apple Cider Vinegar?
Acetic acid The main active compound, known for antimicrobial and metabolic effects
"Mother" Unfiltered ACV contains strands of proteins, enzymes, and beneficial bacteria
Polyphenols Antioxidants found in apples
Trace nutrients Like potassium, magnesium, and amino acids (in small amounts)
Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar
Blood Sugar Regulation
ACV can improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar spikes after meals, especially when taken before carb-heavy foods
Use: 1–2 tablespoons diluted in water before meals
Digestive Health
The "mother" contains probiotics that may support gut health (especially in unfiltered varieties).
Some people report less bloating or better digestion, though evidence is mostly anecdotal
I also find ACV very, very beneficial for common everyday uses such as:
Everyday Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar
Natural Cleaner
Due to its antibacterial properties, apple cider vinegar makes a fantastic natural cleaner. It can cut through grease, neutralize odors, and leave surfaces fresh without the harsh chemicals you often find in store-bought sprays. A simple solution of one part ACV to one part water in a spray bottle works well for countertops, mirrors, and even bathroom tiles. The vinegar scent fades quickly, leaving behind a clean, natural freshness.
Hair Rinse
When diluted properly, ACV can improve shine and help remove build-up from hair products. The natural acidity helps restore the scalp’s pH balance and can make hair feel softer and lighter. Always make sure to dilute before use - one to two tablespoons in a cup of water is plenty. Using this rinse once a week can be enough to notice a difference without over-drying the hair.
Sore Throat Remedy
Gargling with a diluted ACV solution may help soothe mild sore throat symptoms. Mix one teaspoon of ACV with a cup of warm water and gargle for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. Some people also add a teaspoon of honey for extra soothing benefits. While this isn’t a replacement for medical care if symptoms worsen, it can be a gentle home remedy for those first signs of discomfort.
Dishwasher Tablet Tip
Instead of using a shop-bought dishwasher tablet, you can mix 1 tablespoon of ACV, the juice of 1 lemon, and 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda. This combination works brilliantly and leaves dishes sparkling. It also keeps the dishwasher itself cleaner, breaking down grease and limescale over time. It’s a simple, budget-friendly swap that reduces plastic waste and reliance on strong chemicals.

Additional Everyday Uses
Laundry Freshener: Add half a cup of ACV to the rinse cycle to help remove odors from clothes and naturally soften fabrics.
Fruit & Veg Wash: Mix ACV with water (about 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) and soak fresh produce for a few minutes. This helps remove waxes, dirt, and bacteria.
Deodorizer: Place a small bowl of ACV in rooms or near litter trays to neutralize stubborn odors. It absorbs smells rather than just masking them.
Skin Tonic (diluted): Some people use a highly diluted ACV solution as a skin toner to balance pH and reduce blemishes. Always patch test first, and never use it undiluted on the skin.
Apple cider vinegar is incredibly versatile, and keeping a bottle at home means you’ve got a natural helper for cleaning, wellness, and everyday household tasks. The key is always dilution—ACV is strong, so a little goes a long way. Whether you’re freshening up your home, caring for your hair, or trying a natural remedy, ACV is a wonderful addition to a more sustainable and health-conscious lifestyle. Please let me know if you’re already using Apple cider vinegar and what’s your favourite usage for it?
