Feeling Out of Balance

What is Balance?

Balance is a state where your body, mind, and emotions work in harmony, allowing you to adapt to life’s challenges without becoming overwhelmed or depleted.

How it shows up in your body?

Physically

It means your posture, movement, and body systems function smoothly

Mentally

Your thoughts are clear and focused

Emotionally

You can feel and express emotions without getting stuck in them

All of the above is only a short explanation. I could go in much deeper but it’s just a quick overview to what I’d like to explain here.

True balance isn’t about perfection - it’s about staying centred and resilient, even when things shift around you

Being Out of Balance, how does it show ?

It mainly shows up through Structural, Mental and Emotional Imbalance

Structural Imbalance

Structural imbalance refers to misalignments or dysfunctions in the body’s physical framework - bones, muscles, fascia, joints, and posture. This can be caused by repetitive movements, injuries, poor ergonomics, or prolonged static positions

How it shows up in your body

  • Uneven posture (e.g., rounded shoulders, tilted pelvis)

  • Chronic tension or stiffness in certain muscles

  • Limited range of motion

  • One side of the body overcompensating for the other

What’s the impact on the body

  • Circulatory strain: Misalignment can compress blood vessels or nerves

  • Joint wear: Uneven pressure can accelerate arthritis or cartilage damage

  • Chronic pain cycle: Pain leads to guarded movement, which deepens the imbalance

Structural Imbalance

Mental Imbalance

Mental imbalance involves overactivity, underactivity, or rigidity in thought patterns, focus, and cognitive processing. It often results from chronic stress, information overload, lack of mental stimulation, or persistent negative self-talk.

How it shows up in your body

  • Brain fog or poor memory

  • Racing thoughts or inability to focus

  • Difficulty making decisions

  • Overthinking or obsessing on problems

What’s the impact on the body

  • Stress hormone dysregulation: Elevated cortisol can raise blood pressure, weaken immunity, and disrupt digestion

  • Sleep disruption: Poor sleep worsens healing, hormonal balance, and brain function

  • Tension in muscles: The body mirrors mental strain with tight jaw, neck, or shoulders

Emotional Imbalance

Emotional imbalance means being stuck in certain emotional states (e.g., anxiety, anger, sadness) or having unstable, extreme shifts in mood. This can stem from unresolved trauma, unhealthy coping patterns, or lack of emotional processing.

How it shows up in your body

  • Overreacting to small triggers

  • Feeling emotionally “numb” or detached

  • Difficulty expressing or identifying emotions

  • Mood swings without clear cause

What’s the impact on the body

  • Autonomic nervous system stress: Frequent “fight-or-flight” activation keeps the body in a state of vigilance

  • Immune suppression: Chronic negative emotions can impair immune function

  • Digestive changes: Anxiety or grief can alter gut motility and microbiome health

  • Somatic symptoms: Emotional pain can manifest as headaches, chest tightness, or stomach issues

How they interact with each other

Everything is deeply connected. For example:

  • A structural problem (like back pain) can cause mental strain (difficulty concentrating) and emotional stress (frustration, irritability)

  • Emotional stress can cause muscle tension (structural) and mental distraction

  • Mental overwork can lead to poor posture and neglect of physical needs

When all three are imbalanced, the body often shows:

  • Persistent fatigue

  • Recurring illnesses

  • Chronic pain without clear injury

  • Reduced resilience to stress

Why This Matters

Balance is not about perfection - it’s about adaptability. A healthy body -mind system can flex and recover when challenged. Being “Out of Balance” in one area for too long drains energy, narrows coping capacity, and sets the stage for chronic conditions.

Being a practising Dorn Method Therapist, I often see people being Out of Alignment and there is actually so much more that could be done about it. I’ll talk about that one in the next post. Stay tuned.

If something here resonates or offers you a helpful tip or idea, why not consider an energy exchange by buying me a coffee. Thank you so much ♥️
