Growing Microgreens

What are Microgreens?

Microgreens are the young seedlings of edible vegetables, herbs and some grains, harvested shortly after the first true leaves appear. Most varieties are ready to harvest within 6–14 days, depending on the type of seed and growing conditions.

These tiny greens, usually only 2.5–7.5 cm (1–3 inches) tall, are loved for their fresh flavour, vibrant colours and attractive appearance. From the peppery taste of radish to the sweet flavour of pea shoots, there's a microgreen to suit almost every palate.

Microgreens are grown in soil or another growing medium, such as coconut coir, and are harvested by cutting the stems just above the roots.

Mixture of different Microgreens

Unlike sprouts, which are grown entirely in water and eaten whole, microgreens develop leaves and are harvested above the growing medium. This gives them a fresh texture and makes them a popular addition to sandwiches, salads, soups, pasta dishes and many other meals.

One of the things I love most is how quickly they grow. Watching a handful of seeds transform into a tray of vibrant greens in little more than a week is incredibly satisfying.

These can be added to sandwiches, salads, soups or main meals

Why Grow Your Own Microgreens?

Microgreens are much more than a colourful garnish. They're one of the easiest edible crops to grow at home and are ideal whether you have a large garden or just a sunny windowsill.

Here are a few reasons why I enjoy growing them.

Freshly Harvested Whenever You Need Them

Growing your own means you can harvest microgreens just before eating them, giving you fresh flavour and crisp texture straight from your tray to your plate.

A Nutritious Addition to Meals

Microgreens naturally contain a variety of vitamins, minerals and other plant compounds. Some scientific studies have found that certain varieties may contain higher concentrations of some nutrients than their mature counterparts, although this varies depending on the type of plant and the nutrient being measured.

They're an easy way to add colour, texture and variety to a balanced diet.

Less Packaging

Growing microgreens at home can reduce the need to buy plastic-packaged salad leaves and herbs from the supermarket. You simply harvest what you need, helping to reduce food waste as well.

Perfect for Small Spaces

No garden? No problem.

Microgreens grow happily on a bright windowsill, kitchen counter or small shelf. Most varieties are ready to harvest in just one to two weeks, making them an ideal crop for beginners and experienced growers alike.

They can be grown throughout the year, allowing you to enjoy fresh greens whatever the season.

Final Thoughts

Growing microgreens has become one of my favourite ways to enjoy fresh home-grown food. They're quick to grow, easy to look after and bring wonderful colour and flavour to everyday meals.

Whether you're completely new to growing food or already enjoy gardening, microgreens are a simple project that offers rewarding results in a surprisingly short time.
