Smudging and Clearing

Smudging for Energy ClearingWhat a wonderful way to clear negative energy

What is Smudging?

Smudging with Sage is an ancient, traditional spiritual practice used in various cultures, particularly among Indigenous tribes in North America. It is a wonderful way to clear negative energy around space and yourself or others.

It is something I heard about many, many years ago. I thought it was a silly thing to do, but after having tried it myself, I soon found out that it really works and found it very useful to know HOW to CLEAR NEGATIVE ENERGY around spaces and yourself or others or even an object by burning dried Sage or Palo Santo wood. In case you’re wondering where to get them from, many spiritual shops or even Amazon sell them.

How to use a Smudge stick or Palo Santo?

  • Light the tip of the smudge stick using a match or a candle flame.

  • Hold the smudge stick at a slight angle and guide the smoke around your body or the space you want to cleanse, starting from your feet and moving upwards.

  • Allow yourself to be present in the moment, deeply inhaling the aroma of the sage and taking slow, gentle breaths.

  • Once you are done, place the smudge stick on the edge of a fire-safe bowl or vessel and let it burn out.

  • Feel the power and the energy of release

What are the benefits of Smudging? There are quite a few

  • Energy Cleansing - many people believe that sage clears negative energy from spaces, objects and people

  • The ritual of smudging can promote relaxation and emotional stability

  • Burning sage may help clear mental fog, improving concentration and decision making

Potential RISKS and what to watch out for!

It should go without saying to never leave burning sage unattended (make sure to keep an eye on the smudge stick while it’s smoking)

  • Always use a fireproof container like a ceramic bowl or a metal dish filled with sand

  • Extinguish the stick properly by rinsing the smudge stick with water

  • Always keep away from flammable items such as curtains, paper or anything that can catch fire easily

  • Make sure to ventilate your space by opening a window or door to let the smoke and negative energy escape

  • Caution: Sage smoke can irritate sensitive lungs, therefore use in moderation

  • Sacred Indigenous practice. It would be nice to approach it with respect and understanding, especially if using it in a spiritual context

  • Smudging can be most effective when done with a clear purpose, whether for cleansing, protection or even meditation

  • Be prepared to experience emotional releases or heightened sensitivity during or after smudging
